How Is Chalazion Treatment Done In Malaysia?

Chalazion is a lump on the eyelid caused by inflammation of the Meibomian gland in the eyelid.

Before determining the appropriate options for chalazion treatment, the ophthalmologist will have to examine your eye. Although chalazion appear as a painless lump on the eye lid, it can become infected. In some cases, it can also harden.

Chalazion is not contagious. But, the swelling of the oil gland in the eyelid can be unsightly and uncomfortable. Sometimes, it can even distort or blur the vision.

Chalazion can take days or weeks and in certain cases can even takes years to go away by itself. It’s best to check with an eye doctor to have the proper chalazion treatment given early.

How is chalazion treated?

Chalazion treatment without surgery is possible for early stages. Depending on the severity, your ophthalmologist may prescribe you topical antibiotics and advise you to do home treatment. For others, surgery might be the best choice.

How to perform chalazion treatment from home?

For home treatment, you may be advised to apply warm compression to the eyelid. Here’s how you can prepare a warm compress:

  • soak a clean teaspoon in a bowl of warm water.
  • compress the teaspoon to the eyelid for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • repeat the compressing process 3 to 4 times a day.

You can also apply lid scrubs under your doctor’s advice. Medication and antibiotics will also be prescribed if there is a need. If the chalazion still remains after a certain period of time, a follow up may be necessary.

One thing to take note of is to never try to squeeze or pop the chalazion. Squeezing it might cause even more damage. The action can also increase the risk of eye infection to the surrounding eyelid.

How is chalazion surgery performed?

The surgery for chalazion is generally quick. It can be done under local anesthesia. Once it is administered, the doctor will then make a small incision on the bump from the inside of the eyelid and drain out the pus. This minor surgery can take up to 15 minutes.

Chalazion surgery is usually performed underneath the eyelid. Hence, there will be no scar on the skin and does not require stitches. However, the eye might feel sore for several days following the surgery.

After the surgery, you might be prescribed antibiotics ointment to avoid the operated site from getting an infection. You may be given eye pads to protect your eye as well.

On average, it takes 3 to 5 days. Until then, it’s best to keep the eye clean. Avoid sporting activities such as diving or swimming that will worsen the infection. You might also have to avoid wearing contact lenses and makeup until the wound is completely healed.

Will chalazion come back after surgery?

Since chalazion is basically a collection of pus and lipids, it would not grow back after it is removed in the surgery. However, there is a possibility that it will form again if there’s a blockage to the oil-producing gland as a new infection.
