What are the causes of strabismus?
There are several reasons for strabismus or squint. The ability for both eyes to move in an aligned manner and focused on a single direction depends on the eye muscles and an area in our brain called the fusion centre.
The fusion centre is where the input from both the eyes are combined. If there is a problem with the development of this fusion centre in children which can happen in the womb, this can cause squint.
Another reason for strabismus is when there is short-sightedness(myopia) or long-sightedness(hyperopia). Under these conditions, the visual acuity is not clear. Input to the fusion centre in the brain is not strong and cause squint.
Problems with eye muscles too can cause strabismus or squint. This is usually caused by the abnormality of the input to the nerves of these eye muscles. This condition is called cranial nerve palsies.
Other reasons for strabismus include cataract, retinoblastoma and macular scar. For a more thorough examination on the cause of it, make an appointment with our eye doctor at Sunway Eye Centre today.
