Commonly known as “surfer’s eye”, pterygium is a growth of the conjunctiva that covers the white part of the eye and cornea. It usually forms at the corner of your eye, towards the side closest to your nose, and will grow towards the pupil. The growth can occur in either one or both eyes and can be hazardous to your safety as it can interfere with your vision.
Although pterygium is a benign tissue growth, it can be annoying and affect vision. It may induce astigmatism and change your eye’s refractive power. People with pterygium may experience decreased vision and a foreign body sensation. This condition is more common in sunny, hot and dry climates.
Artificial tears can be prescribed to ease the foreign body sensation. The best way to treat pterygium is surgical removal followed by graft. This surgery, which is typically conducted under 60 minutes, is performed by our trained specialists.
